As a new mother, it is understandable that you worry about almost anything that concerns your baby. Now that the child is beyond six months old, you are beginning to search for clues about when do babies sleep through the night.

You are getting concerned about how this habit might affect your baby’s growth. You are also getting impatient about when will you be able to get a full night’s sleep on a regular basis.

Every mother goes through the sleepless nights phase. This begins from the time the baby was born up to three weeks. At this point, your baby needs 16 to 20 hours of sleep per day. The baby doesn’t have any idea about the difference between night and day, so most of his waking hours will be done during the night.

The pattern will continue up until the baby is two months old wherein he will spend more waking hours during the day. This does not mean that you are already done waking up in the middle of the night to feed the baby or play with him.

At four months, you can set some routines regarding the sleeping and feeding schedule so that the baby will follow your lead and this will also train him to sleep through the night. You just have to be consistent about this, but make sure that you don’t force your baby to do anything that he isn’t ready to follow.

You have to take it easy, and besides, he won’t be a baby for too long. You have to treasure every moment that you share with him even while he is sleeping or he is awake in the wee hours of the morning.

He is still in the process of getting the feeling of security and he can only get that whenever you come to his aid when he cries or stays awake at night. You don’t have to do anything, but to give him what he needs.

You have to feed him when he is hungry, play with him if he is in the mood for it. Through time, he will be able to develop a regular sleeping pattern and it will be best if no one has forced him into it.

At nine months, your baby will sleep for 11 or 12 hours during the night. The quality of his sleep at this point will be affected by how long he takes his naps during the day and in the afternoon. Make sure that he doesn’t exceed one to two hours in each nap so that he won’t find it hard to sleep at night.



 

This is your third baby, but there are still certain things that confuse you, such as when do babies sleep through the night. It is different with the first one as it happened earlier than usual at four months. The second one slept through the night at nine months.

This is only normal because different babies develop various skills at different paces and rates. This means that different babies will develop regular sleeping patterns at different times and ages. To help you understand this, here’s a brief look at the usual sleeping patterns of babies from birth onwards.

During their early months, babies need to rely a lot on what you feed them. Their small tummies can only accommodate liquids, which digest easily, so their sleeping pattern is also affected by how often they ask for milk. This may come every four hours or two, but this can also happen after every hour.

From the time that they were born up to three to six weeks, babies will probably sleep up to 18 hours every day.

A full night’s sleep for a baby does not necessarily mean that it needs to happen during nighttime. This can be during the day for as long as he sleeps uninterrupted for five hours. This duration is, of course, not sufficient for adults.

From two to four months, most babies will consume these five hours of continuous sleep from midnight to five in the morning.  After this phase, it does not mean that it will always be this way. There will be times when they will wake up in the middle of the night and will find it hard to go back to sleep. This pattern will continue until they are one or two years old.

Sleep is one thing that cannot be forced into them because they will only do this if they are tired. You will not be able to wake them up if they are sleeping soundly and you also cannot make them sleep if they don’t want to.

When they get much older, you will look back at this phase with awe, especially when the child can already sleep alone in his room. You will miss the days when he seeks your company for warmth and to reassure him that he is safe.
